Red Alert
Here we have a Canon’s or Dean’s biretta. It has a red tuft and red lining. Some have red piping, should the pom-pom not on its own not quite strike the right note.
Is that a pom-pom or a tassel? It looks quite like a tassel.

Titus, it looks to me as if it is a pom pon that has not been unbound yet.
ReplyDeleteTeam DB, I have photographs of a Master's in Theology receiving his biretta. It is black with a red pom and piping.
Well spotted, and my bad, it is indeed a tassel. But the two are relatively interchangeable.
ReplyDeleteAndy, yes please! Send away.
Really? That's interesting, I didn't know that: I assumed the tassels were peculiar to a few orders (like the CSC). Thanks for the clarification.
ReplyDeleteI inherited a black biretta from our former Abbot. It has red piping and a red pom.
